The American Go Honor Society (AGHS) started 2023 with the return of the Pair Go Tournament. The tournament attracted 94 players with levels ranging from 17K to 7D. It consisted of two rounds and 12 divisions, each with four teams of similar rank. The winning teams from Round 1 faced off against each other in Round 2.
The champion teams of the top four divisions is Shang Zhou 7D and Yixian Zhou 6D (Division A), Jake Game 5D and Jasper Emerton 4D (Division B), Ryan Huang 1K and Ge Wang 3D (Division C), and Jason Liu 2D and Yutong Gan 1D (Division D). In the lower divisions, the champion teams included Angel Zhou 3K and Lester Lanphear 1K (Division E), Justin Collier 1K/Steve Zhang 1D and Yuri Tarasov 3K (Division F), Haskell Small 1K and Betsy Small 11K (Division G), Jeffrey Kubach 11K and Fei Li 3K (Division H), Mark Zhang 5K and Bryan Chung 11K/Andy Zhang 6K (Division I), Amari González 12K and Alastair Mclaughlin 13K (Division J), Royal Ni 18K and Roger Ni 15K (Division K), and Connor Ham 16K and Jacob Ham 25K (Division L).
For many players, the Pair Go Tournament was a fun opportunity to fuel competitive spirits. Joshua Wong 3K was one of the players in Division E.
“The most memorable moment was watching Round 2 and seeing our first opponent lose, which meant we were getting third,” Wong said. “I can’t wait to see a more quick and fun tournament like this one. 9×9, 13×13, crazy go, flying knife, and stuff like that.”
