Last Sunday, Nov. 13, American Daniel Luo 1K faced off against Hong Kong Yifu Wang 1D in an exciting back-and-forth game. Playing black, Luo secured a strong start by building territory in the corners and sides while Wang strove to build a strong moyo on the bottom of the board. Ultimately, Luo’s invasion into the bottom corner during the midgame would overcome Wang’s large potential territory, expertly finding E2 and taking the bottom left corner. Behind, Wang strove to capture the center with surrounding moves, but a fatal error in the analysis would cause Wang to lose his potential territory in exchange for saving his group on the right. Unable to find points on the board, Wang resigned at move 189.
“It was an exciting game to watch!” AGHS Vice-President Patrick Zhao said, “You could certainly feel the intensity of both players in the game. I look forward to the final match now that the score is tied 1-1!”
