AGHS Announces Creative Writing and Art Contest, With $150 in Prizes

AGHS is proud to announce its 2024 Creative Writing and Art Contest. All Go players in North America are eligible to participate. Any artistic or writing medium, such as short essays, poems, or paintings, are acceptable.

The creative piece must address or relate to the experience of playing, teaching, or interacting with Go as a North American. Works will be judged based on quality of presentation, relevance to the experience of Go players in the West, and skill and effort involved in the work.

Three of the most inspiring works will receive a prize of $50 each, paid via check.

Writers and artists can consider any one of the following prompts to address in their work. Note that while the submission does not have to directly address any of the following prompts, the work should still relate to the experience of Go players in the West.

  • Why do you enjoy Go? When did you start playing? Why did you start playing?
  • How has Go shaped you as a person? How do its concepts apply to real life?
  • What is your favorite memory playing Go and why?
  • Go can often be a social activity, connecting members of distinct generations. Have you played Go with your parents or grandparents? What was that like?
  • Have you ever competed in a Go tournament? Tell us about that experience.
  • What’s your favorite opening in Go? Why? Who’s your favorite Go player?
  • Consider a fictional Go player who completely mastered the cosmic style of Go. What would that Go player’s life be like? How would that affect history?
  • What needs to be done for Go to become popularized in the West?

The submission deadline is Sunday 5/19, via this Google form
